On the odd occasion that I have the luxury of time to page through beautiful home magazines, or scroll through gorgeous images of immaculate home offices and stylish kitchens, I escape to a dreamworld where I picture myself living in a house like that. A house where there is nothing out of place, walls with no fingerprints and no toys to trip over in the early hours of the morning.
And whilst part of me fantasises about this type of glamorous lifestyle, I am too aware that whilst I probably won’t ever live in a house begging to be featured in the latest design magazine, I will one day live in a house void of the everyday traces of childhood. The everyday signs that kids were here.
Thanks to the inspiration of these amazing photographers, I have decided to start a new photography project called “Kids Were Here.” As their childhood toys disappear and the plastic crockery and animal-shaped toothbrushes are replaced with more grown up versions, I want to have a place to go back and remind myself that kids lived here, together with the mess, the items lying all over the house and the childhood spirit that accompanied all this. This is for me, for the day when I need to remember that kids were here.
